    		Ignoring the multiple ground firing electrodes in both the picture and illustration above, note the supplementary gap at the base of the threaded shell. This small gap aids in self cleaning by allowing the carbon to briefly accumulate which diverts the spark from the side electrode. Briefly diverting the spark burns away the accumulated carbon, thus self cleaning the firing tip. When clean, the plug will then resume the spark between the center and ground electrodes.
